About the Condition
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder affects more than just your mood. It can change how you think, how you sleep, how you connect with others—and how you see yourself. These changes can happen in cycles, with periods of intense energy (mania or hypomania) and deep lows (depression). Many people also have long stretches where they feel mostly okay. But when symptoms return, they can feel overwhelming and hard to manage.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder
- Mania
- Excessively high or overly cheerful mood
- Unusual energy, restlessness
- Racing thoughts, fast speech
- Irritability or aggressive behavior
- Poor judgment or risky decisions
- Reduced need for sleep
- Spending more than usual
- Increased sexual drive or flirtation
- Grand ideas or spiritual focus
- Use of alcohol or drugs
- Difficulty focusing or finishing tasks
- Not eating, losing track of time
- Reaching out to many people at once
- Hypomania
- Similar symptoms to mania, but milder
- Symptoms last a few days
- May still be able to function at work or socially
- Depression
- Feeling tired or slow
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Avoiding people, withdrawing from daily life
- Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or anxiety
- Trouble concentrating or remembering things

- Listening to sad music, crying often
- Missing work or social commitments
- Thoughts of suicide
- Psychotic Symptoms (in some cases)
- Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there)
